Patent Attorney

Ryan Dunning is an attorney licensed to practice law in California and before the United States Patent & Trademark Office. He has worked in the field of intellectual property law since 2007. Previously, Mr. Dunning worked at The Law Offices of Andrew D. Fortney, Ph.D., P.C. in central California, and at the Patent Law & Venture Group in southern California.

Mr. Dunning worked under Dr. George Smoot (2006 Nobel Prize recipient in Physics) in the Cosmology division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, where he used computer modeling to study variations in cosmic microwave background radiation. Mr. Dunning also worked under Dr. Frank Asaro (one of the original proponents of the asteroid impact hypothesis of dinosaur extinction) in the Nuclear Science division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he studied the Cretaceous-Tertiary geological boundary as it relates to the asteroid impact hypothesis.

Mr. Dunning has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in a variety of technology areas, including computer software, video compression, RFID tags, flash memory, digital imaging, optics, optoelectronics, semiconductor manufacturing, medical devices, mechanical devices.

Although Mr. Dunning has extensive experience practicing U.S. patent law, he has also worked on international patent applications, including applications in the patent offices of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Canada, and Europe. Mr. Dunning enjoys responding to rejection notices (Office Actions) from the patent office, arguing against the rejections, and overcoming the rejections to successfully obtain a patent for his clients.

Besides his involvement in various IP associations, Mr. Dunning has participated in other legal communities. For example, he acted as a mock trial judge at the Harvey Wallace Northern California Mock Trial Competition in Fresno, California. Prior to his career in law, Mr. Dunning was a science teacher, teaching Physics and Earth Science at the high school level.
